Floyd and Sharon Gentry
Floyd and Sharon Gentry came to Albuquerque 25 years ago from Missouri. They first met and dated when they discovered as teenagers that they had a mutual interest in Model A’s. Floyd had a 1930 Fordoor Murray sedan that he later sold for $65. The 1929 Model A pickup truck that we currently drive was Sharon’s when she first started college in 1961. It did not work out because it had limited travel range and her father replaced it with a more reliable car, a 1951 Chevy.
He proceeded to dismantle the Model A with the intention of restoring it. The pieces were in various garages for over 40 years until his death. After that I loaded up everything I could in a U-haul trailer and moved it to Albuquerque where I began a 3-year frame off restoration with the help of Gerald Cessac. Many of you watched the progress to completion, as that’s when we joined the club.
Sharon’s mom, Eileen, was very interested in the restoration as we restored the car in memory of Sharon’s dad. We called her on our cell phone to listen to the engine the first time we started it. She later came out and got to ride it in, and attended several of our club meetings. We presently drive it, but don’t venture out of the area because it will only go 45 miles per hour due to lower gearing.
Our next venture was to find a touring car that we could take on longer trips. What we found was a 1930 Model A Tudor deluxe sedan, which we added to our collection. It has a Mitchell overdrive, hydraulic brakes, 12-volt electrical system, turn signals, and other upgrades. We successfully took the 2400 mile trip to Yellowstone this fall without any major problems other than minor adjustments. We never ended up on the emergency trailer that followed us.
Floyd has been president of the Poco Quatros Model A Club and Sharon has been newsletter editor for 2 years before Jonathan took over this year. She has also served as director. Floyd is now retired from the nuclear weapons complex (Sandia Labs.) Sharon retired from teaching English and journalism at Highland High School. We have two grown daughters and four grandsons in Denver and Cincinnati.
